Walter Dwyer’s legacy as founding benefactor of the Poor Clares in cork is remembered this year 2 September 2025 - first centenary of his death

He is remembered especially for funding the building of the monastery in 1914 and, together with the servant of god, Fr. Willie Doyle SJ, for facilitating the arrival of his daughter Sr. Maria Dwyer along with the founding Poor Clare sisters here in college road.

His death occurred on September 2nd 1925 in the Bon Secours Hospital next door. His body reposed overnight in this Poor Clare chapel.

Forty years later on the same day in 1965 his beloved daughter Sr. Maria died.

Vocations flourished in the intervening years . This led to two new foundations being made from Cork to Glasgow and Ennis in 1950s – and from Ennis to Papua Guinea in 1971.

May God be praised and glorified for this remarkable legacy of Walter Dwyer and his daughter  Sr. Maria Dwyer along with Fr. Willie Doyle and all involved in the Poor Clares coming to Cork and continuing to this day!
